Architectural Photography of St Walburge’s Church in Preston, Lancashire

St Walburge’s Church in Preston, Lancashire dominates the surrounding area, it is in fact the third tallest spire in England (and the tallest spire of any parish church in England). It was designed by Joseph Hansom (of the Hansom Cab fame) in a gothic revival style and opened in 1854. I have to be honest, I knew nothing of the church until very recently when I was chatting with a very good friend who believes it is one of the most beautiful churches in the UK. It does have an air of elegance and an almost ghost like appearance, especially when viewed from a distance.

Time for a project methinks, so I have made a start. I am not sure where I am going to take this but here are three images from my first visit to the church.

Happy New Year to you all.

A few days late I know but I had a day of catching up on emails etc yesterday,so had no chance to blog. Anyway looking back on 2011 it was a good year, better than 2010 and 2010 was better than 2009 so things are looking up. Lets hope that 2012 brings the same level of increase. Plenty of naysayers around but I do find if you remain positive good things happen.

So heres to 2012!!

I often get asked by friends and potential clients, ‘Why would anybody need a pro photographer? digital cameras are really good these days’. Digital cameras are really good and 9 times out of 10 give a sharp well exposed acceptable images. Acceptable, that is it, not stunning. You still need to ‘create’ an image that is outstanding, this could be through composition, lighting, the rapport that you create with your subject etc etc.

Many years (20!!) ago my driving instructor said to me that because cameras (film in those days) where so good that photography was all down to luck. You can be lucky with a photograph, but to get repeated ‘luck’ you really need to know what you are doing, that is why, then as well as now, there is still need for a pro photographer.

I own a pen it doesn’t make me a writer (as you can probably tell by my short blog posts!!).

Weird George Osborne- Photographs

You may remember last year I photographed the Chancellor George Osborne for Insider Magazine.

He was an odd character, confident and nervous(??), almost like a little boy, very weird. So here are a few of the out takes of him pulling faces. Childish, I know, but fun.

He is as you probably already know from one of my previous posts the same age as me,I thought he was in his late forties. I think I have aged better.

Shot Up North – Postcards

As many of you will already know my architectural image of the Big One at Blackpool, was a finalist in the Shot Up North (SUN) annual awards. So I decided to get some postcards printed up for promo use . A good friend of mine Tony Bentley of www.thebentleystudio.com created the artwork and sorted the postcards out for me. Having know Tony for years I knew he would do a good job and true to form he came up with the design below and turned everything around in a couple of days. I have to say they have had great feedback, maybe you would like to leave some of your feedback below.

Busy Times

Hi all, sorry I have not blogged for a few weeks, I have been a bit busy of late. Lots of bread and butter corporate photography jobs and some personal work. As you probably know I have been working on a project of Preston Bus Station, Lancashire. Not glamorous I know, but an important architectural masterpiece that I needed to photograph. Well I think, not sure , I have finished the photography now, I need to edit and get it all together, maybe into a book. It is probably going to be some time before I actually get anything published but I hope to have something online within the next month. Here is a taster, not sure of the style yet but I am playing with a few ideas.

10PEOPLE project- Carlton Watt – CWWeddings

The penultimate photograph in the 10people series is of Carlton Watt of CWWeddings.

I have know Carlton for around 15years and we have worked on projects together many times. Carlton is a photographer in his own right and runs the his succesful wedding photography business and produces personal work for his website Skin Storm.

The idea behind this shoot was to ‘balance’ his head in the bottom right hand corner of the frame. As you can see the only light source is window light from the right hand side. I already had planned that it was going to be in black and white.

When I first shot this I was not entirely happy with the result and set up another set of images which I was very pleased with, however I revisted this image and started to prefer it.

Often is the case that images can look better weeks after the shoot, at the time you can be too close to the image and not see it for what it is.

Architectural photography of Preston Bus Station, Lancashire

It may not sound the most exotic place in the world but Preston Bus Station is a classic and good example of brutalist architecture. Conceived in the 1960’s Preston Bus Station was finally completed in 1969. Love it or hate it most people who use it agree that it works, the problem is it is in the wrong part of town, about a mile from the railway staion, not exactly integrated public transport. Anyway, they (The City Council), want to demolish it and make way for the Tithebarn redevelopment project. It is loved and hated in equal numbers but in my opinion it needs to be kept. I love it, I think it is of a time and that is the reason it needs to stay. I predict that in 20-30 years time people will look back and say “why did we not keep the buildings of the 1960’s they where optimistic and futuristic?”

Right lets get to the point. I have taken a few photographs of the Bus Station because as you probably already know I am one of the few people who actually like 1960’s architecture and I intend to revisit it again and again and get some more.
